POWERFUL THUNDERSTORMS MOVE INTO THE MISSIPPI VALLEY AccuWeather.com
State College, Pa. -- May 2, 2008 -- AccuWeather.com reports powerful thunderstorms will move into the Mississippi Valley today before continuing to press across the Deep South over the weekend. The potent storms today will line up along the length of the Mississippi Valley, with a few storms moving into the Tennessee Valley later in the day.
Damaging straight-line winds, heavy rain, and hail will be the primary threats along and ahead of the squall line; however, there is potential for tornadoes ahead of the front. With a plethora of moisture flowing northward from the Gulf of Mexico, the thunderstorms will also drop drenching downpours. Renewed flash flooding problems are likely to ensue along the banks of the flood-ravaged Mississippi River.
Saturday, showers and thunderstorms will spread across the Southeast, losing some intensity as they push toward the Appalachians.
Wet weather is expected to move east of Louisville, Ky. before the 134th running of the Kentucky Derby. Post time is 6 p.m. EDT on Saturday. Heavy rain is expected to hold off for the NASCAR's Crown Royal 400 race Saturday night in Richmond, Va.
Warm air will spread across the Southeast today before cooler air arrives this weekend, along with the storm system.
